We are often questioned about the size of lapel pins. People often ask how do I know what size pin I want? Well, in this post I will talk about how lapel pins are measured and help you make a better informed decision if you are designing you own lapel pin or thinking about a custom lapel pin in the future.

Ok, a lapel pin is measured on the longest side. Now this get’s slightly confusing. It is not measured diagonally like a computer monitor or television set, instead the easiest way to measure a lapel pin is like this. Draw a square or rectangle around your pin. Then measure the longest side. That is the size of your pin. Remember it must be a square or a rectangle, and that will give you the right size. See our sizing chart for a few examples.

I recently had a customer who wanted a 2 ½ inch pin. When I explained the sizing chart, he immediately said, ”Whoa! That is way too big for what we are looking for, maybe an 1 ½ is more our speed.” After this simple explanation he ordered the size pin that he truly wanted and would have been very dissatisfied with the 2 ½ inch design for his project.
I hope this explains how to properly measure your lapel pins!

Custom Lapel Pins have always been just a trinket that people have never paid much attention to. Then when 9/11 hit, they made a huge come back to show support for the NYPD and the FDNY. Companies started to realize that this was an effective way to market. If you could create a custom lapel pin and the costs were minimal, it could act as a walking billboard for your company, or even substitute for a uniform if you had a workforce that wore business attire.

Now companies everywhere are using lapel pins not only to promote their brand awareness and corporate identity, but also to show their branded support for other efforts their company may be involved with. For instance many companies pick a cause and raise money for that particular cause. Let’s use the example of Breast Cancer Awareness. I have seen many companies create a custom awareness ribbon pin with their logo in the middle, to show support and more importantly their company’s commitment to the cause.

Custom lapel pins are a part of our style culture at this point and we should embrace it,.

When their is a piercing or whole in a lapel pin, that is called a cutout. A cutout could really create a nice element for a lapel pin, however one needs to make sure that the structural integrity of the pin is not effected.

Cutouts create a beautiful effect for a lapel pin. Although the cost is a little higher when designing a pin with a cutout, the over all gain for the design maybe worth it. There are pins that have multiple cutouts to create desired effects.

Look at the image to see what some people have done with cutouts. As you can se, some of these pins are just unbelievable, due to the use of cutouts on the custom lapel pin.

When designing your custom lapel pins, have fun and remember cutouts as a possible option.

The solicitor further explained that she wanted to send me a lapel pin, and requested that I wear it at the event. Naturally, I inquired as to the significance of the lapel pin, and was informed that it was a custom designed pin of the hospital’s logo that would allow me entrance at the door, and also signify to other attendees the size of my donation. A $100 donation earned me a bronze pin; a $200 donation earned me a silver pin; and a $250 donation allowed me to be a big shot, and earned me a gold pin.

Well, not only did I think of the event as a night out, but also, I figured I’d use it as a chance to network. I didn’t want to be labeled the “cheap guy” while trying to network myself as the entrepreneur of the year, so I opted for the gold pin in the spirit of giving, and in an attempt to be well-perceived.

I was actually shocked that evening: Out of the 400 people that showed up to the event, there were very few bronze pins being worn, almost no silver pins, and over 95% gold pins being worn. I thought, “Wow, what a great fundraising marketing campaign… The other contributors must have fallen in line with the same philosophy.” Needless to say, construction has already begun for the new unit.

In a world of “Perception is reality“, this fundraising marketing technique was truly a winner.

We receive the question very often, “Should we use an epoxy coating?”

The answer is not always easy. I am a firm believer that a custom lapel pin is all about personal preference. The epoxy coating is an option but is not always needed.

Let’s talk about the different styles of lapel pins.

The photodome pin must have an epoxy coating.

Epola pins or Imitation Hard Enamel pins are not recommended to have an epoxy coating, however I have seen times where epoxy was applied.

Soft enamel lapel pins is usually where the question begins.

One has to remember, epoxy s used as a protective covering. Oftentimes when lapel pins are going to be worn and exposed to being damaged (such as on a uniform), epoxy is a good idea. Remember that some details will be lost when the epoxy coating is placed on the lapel pin, because of reflections and depth perceptions.

I was recently contacted by a client who was an artist. This artist was having an exhibition of their work in New York City Art Gallery. This artist had an idea that they wanted to capitalize on the exposure that they would receive at the exhibition. So hence an idea was born!

The concept was a simple one.Preview »

This artist photographed their artwork at 300 dpi and forwarded me the images. We were able to create a set of custom lapel pins in a photodome style, for 5 of the top pieces.

These pins were sold at the event, so that each of the visitors could bring home a little piece of the exhibit. These pins would be a conversation piece as well as a marketing tool for weeks, months, and years to come.

One pin was given to each visitor with option to buy the rest of the set. Well, after we received our feedback, I found that the sales were unbelievable and the pins actually sold out.

The art gallery was apparently impressed with the response and they wanted to work out arrangements for future artists.

This was a unique request which has opened our eyes to a new niche within the market.

Who would have thought a new canvas found in a lapel pin that is now a mobile billboard for an artist.

The customer joked that his work might now be seen in many other galleries, but now in the form of a pin worn by an visitor at his exhibition.

Lapel Pins come in every different size and shape that you can imagine. So let’s discuss how a lapel pin is measured. Place a ruler on the table. Lay the lapel pin on the ruler. Now measure the two furtherest points. This will give you the size of the pin in inches. Most custom lapel pins vary in size from 1/2 inch , 3/4 inch, 7/8 inch, 1 inch, 1 1/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch. These sizes are mentioned because they are the most popular sizes, however you can choose any size that you like. When considering size, detail gets lost in small pins. If you are looking to create a very detailed lapel pin, you should look to a 7/8 inch to 1 1/2 inch size pin. Our art department made a tutorial that explains how to determine a lapel pin size very well. The lapel pin size chart in .pdf can be found here.

Remember the edges of the lapel pins are metal and the colors of the lapel pins are usually separated by a metal line.

Simple fonts should be used to ensure that the words can be read properly. Script fonts are very difficult to read when a lapel pin is created. Remember most text is in metal so a block type font always is recommended. The smaller the pin is the harder the words are to read. Larger lapel pins can use more difficult fonts.
